How Many of You Think Happy Campers Is an Enzyme Treatment?
We have a feeling quite a few of you do.
Enzyme and bacteria-based RV tank treatments have become so common that many RV owners assume nearly every holding tank treatment works basically the same way.
And the difference isn't just about what's in the container.
It's about what we believe a holding tank treatment should actually accomplish inside your RV.
First: What Does an Enzyme Treatment Actually Do?
Let's keep this really simple.
Think of enzymes like tiny scissors.
Enzymes help break larger organic materials into smaller components that can be further broken down through biological processes.
That's a perfectly legitimate approach to waste treatment.
But over the years, RV owners have increasingly been taught to associate one thing with an effective holding tank treatment:
How quickly can it digest waste and toilet paper?
You've probably seen demonstrations built around exactly that idea — put waste or toilet paper into a container, add a treatment and see how quickly everything breaks apart.
It's certainly an impressive visual.
We don't think it does.
RV Owners Are Still Having Holding Tank Problems
This is one of the reasons we started our RV Holding Tank Research Project.
We wanted to better understand the problems RV owners are actually experiencing — not just what treatment manufacturers say is important.
In an early snapshot of our survey:
- 85% of respondents said they regularly use a holding tank treatment.
- RV owners still reported odors, inaccurate tank sensors, buildup, clogs and other holding tank frustrations.
- Sensor problems were reported approximately 50% more often than odor problems.
Part of the answer may be that we've been thinking about the job of a holding tank treatment too narrowly.
Your RV Black Tank Isn't a Septic System
This may be the most important distinction in this entire conversation.
A septic tank is part of a wastewater treatment system.
Wastewater enters the tank, heavier solids settle, lighter material forms a scum layer, microorganisms process organic material, and clarified wastewater eventually moves into a drainfield for additional treatment.
That process depends on separation, retention time, biological activity and the controlled movement of wastewater through the system.
Your RV black tank has a much simpler job.
It's primarily a temporary holding vessel.
Waste goes in.
It sits there for a relatively short period of time.
Then you open a valve and expect it to come back out.
That's an important difference because it changes what we should be asking from an RV holding tank treatment.
Even in Septic Systems, More Digestion Isn't Automatically Better
Here's where the science gets interesting.
If adding more biological or enzymatic activity were automatically better for waste systems, you might expect septic-system experts to routinely recommend enzyme additives.
They don't.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says septic-system additives are generally unnecessary because properly functioning systems already contain bacteria, enzymes, yeasts, fungi and other microorganisms needed for treatment.
The EPA also cautions that additives can sometimes be ineffective or negatively affect system operation, including potentially contributing to clogging or reducing drainfield performance.
That doesn't mean enzymes themselves are inherently bad.
A peer-reviewed study published in Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering tested enzyme additives using both batch reactors and continuous-flow reactors designed to simulate septic-tank conditions.
The researchers measured solids, suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand and other indicators to determine whether adding enzymes increased hydrolysis or digestion.
Overall, they found no significant improvement in the enzyme-treated reactors compared with the untreated controls.
The study concluded that enzyme addition was unlikely to significantly increase digestion rates or improve septic-tank performance under the conditions tested.
Again, that's not an argument that enzymes don't work.
Enzymes absolutely can break down organic materials.
It's an important reminder that breaking material down faster and improving the performance of an entire waste system are not necessarily the same thing — especially when we're talking about a waste holding tank.

And That's Where Happy Campers Thinks Differently
Instead of asking:
“How fast can we digest everything in the tank?”
We think the more useful question is:
“What needs to happen inside an RV holding tank so the waste doesn't become a problem before it's dumped?”
That changes the priorities.
Keep Waste Manageable
We want waste and toilet paper to remain manageable inside the liquid rather than becoming a compacted mass.
Reduce Sticking & Buildup
Material that continually adheres to tank surfaces can contribute to residue, buildup and contaminated tank sensors over time.
Control Odor
Odor control is one of the most important jobs of a holding tank treatment — and we think it deserves more attention.
Our research shows that odor is a primary reason RV owners turn to holding tank treatments. Yet many RV owners also assume that treatments work essentially the same way and that faster waste digestion means better overall performance.
But breaking down waste and controlling odor are not the same thing.

There's another reason we believe there's more to holding tank performance than how quickly a treatment breaks down waste in a demonstration.

That's the kind of performance we're interested in.
Does the tank stay manageable?
Do odors stay under control?
Do the sensors continue to work?
Does waste leave the tank when it's time to dump?
Those are the outcomes that actually matter to an RV owner.
Customer experiences aren't laboratory studies, and no holding tank treatment can guarantee that an RV will never experience a problem. But years of successful real-world use help illustrate something that a short-term waste breakdown demonstration can't:
A treatment doesn't have to rapidly digest everything in the tank to help maintain a well-performing holding tank over time.
No Holding Tank Treatment Is Magic
We think this is important to say, too.
No treatment approach is perfect.
Enzyme treatments have strengths and limitations.
Bacteria-based treatments have strengths and limitations.
Mineral-based treatments have strengths and limitations.
A treatment also can't compensate for every tank-management mistake.
If an RV owner uses too little water, allows a tank to repeatedly dry out, leaves a dump valve open continuously or already has years of hardened buildup inside the tank, simply changing treatments may not solve the underlying problem.
Good holding tank performance comes from the combination of good tank management and the right treatment approach.
That's also why we believe understanding how a treatment works is more useful than watching which product makes toilet paper disappear fastest in a jar.
Enzymes Focus on Digestion.
We Focus on the Tank.
That's probably the simplest way we can explain the difference.
Happy Campers isn't trying to turn your RV black tank into a miniature septic system.
We're focused on tank science: what happens to waste while it's being stored, whether material sticks and accumulates, how odors are controlled, and what happens when you finally pull the dump valve.
Your black tank doesn't need everything inside it to completely decompose.
It needs to hold it without becoming a problem — and then let it go.

Note: Research concerning enzyme additives in residential septic systems should not be interpreted as demonstrating that enzyme-based RV holding tank treatments are inherently harmful.
